Factors Determining Student’s Career Choices
All college students must choose an area of specialization at one point during their undergraduate education. While it may appear to be an easy task, choosing a subject to pursue in college is one of the most challenging exercises. Students are often confused on whether to follow their passion or to be guided by the career prospects. In recent times, this confusion appears to have been settled by the hard economic times, where the drive for survival supersedes passion for a given subject. More college students are opting for majors that provide a more promising future rather than opting for the courses they are passionate about. The reason for this trend, therefore, is the high unemployment rate that has made the search of jobs after graduate a more challenging affair.
The hard economic times has made people to rethink about everything they invest in. The purpose of any investment is to make a profit and the degree, being a long-term investment, has knowledge as profit. However, the monetary investment put in education will at one point need to be paid back, which means that the profit from education has to be inform of finance, rather than just academic. According to a 2015 report by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, 4 in every 5 graduates opt for a subject that has better job prospects. Thus, it makes more economic sense to opt for a course that will boost your knowledge, as well as financial benefits.
Unfortunately, this desire to get monetary returns from courses has made young people to choose careers that they have no passion in pursuing. The result of such decisions has been poor work attitudes, underperformance, and depression (Najar, & Yousuf, 61). A learner who is passionate about a given career will be able to stand out through excellence and is likely to make more money compared to the one who does something that he or she does not like.
Choosing a career at college level continues to be a challenging task in light of the changing economic factors. Students have to battle several challenges to make the right choice and without appropriate guidance, most of them end up making wrong choices. The right career choice is one that tries to balance both sides of the student’s coin.

This research draws extensively from both primary and secondary sources to explain why most students are opting for courses that guarantee them good jobs rather than courses that they love. The sources consulted include articles, books, newspapers, observations, and common knowledge about how students choose their majors at college level.
