Mentoring is an unspecified relationship between two parties with specific but wide-ranging goals. A mentor is a facilitator who works with an individual or a group of individuals over an extended period. For instance, Deloitte is a well-established accounting firm that offers mentoring, counseling, and coaching services. The firm seeks to build people’s wisdom, knowledge, and skills in all situations and life processes (Downey, 2015). Deloitte targets psychological functions, such as counseling, benchmarking, and role modeling. On the other hand, coaching is a process that aims at improving performance through the development of specific skills. It focuses on meeting particular objectives within a set period. Coaching programs takes a much shorter time than mentoring (Taylor, 2010).
Counseling can be defined as the professional guidance of individuals by utilizing psychological methods. Counseling can be used to guide people with different needs (University, 2006). For example, Deloitte offers counseling programs that can be used to guide people on their new career or drug addicts. The firm also deals with counseling services, which involve helping people to make the necessary changes in ways of behavior, feeling, and thinking. On the other hand, consulting can be described as an engagement between two parties to advise on specific fields (Taylor, 2010). Deloitte has an established team of experts who are specialized in providing information to a particular group of individuals. The main aim of consulting is to help people solve their problems and move from their current state to the desired state.
Senior employees from different organizations reach out to Deloitte for coaching and mentoring services, which, in effect, help them to teach their juniors about their jobs. Mentoring happens when the senior employees take the responsibility of introducing their juniors through orientation (Downey, 2015). Mentoring relationships play a significant role in the career development of individuals. This because it helps one to grow in the early stages of career and provides a sense of accomplishment in the late-career stages. The influence of mentoring relationships has been widely discussed above academic literature. This is evident in the story of some famous business leaders such as Lee Iacocca and Jack Welch, who have publicly stated that their success has been crystallized by mentoring (University, 2006). Moreover, according to various researches, 75% of senior managers indicate that mentorship relationships play a significant role in people’s careers.
