Research Paper Instructions:

In what ways does the press release misrepresent the findings of the original journal article? What are some of the scientific or methodological weaknesses of the research that is being discussed?

(a)    Are there any factual errors in the press release? In other words, does the press release make factual mistakes concerning things like the number of participants in the study or the results of the study?

(b)    Does the press release make causal claims from data that, in the original journal article, are only correlational?

(c)     Does the press release make an exaggerated claim about the research; a claim that is too strong or that goes “beyond the data”? For instance, does the press release exaggerate the results by making it sound as though there were bigger differences between the groups of people tested in the study than there actually were? Alternatively, are claims made in the press release about a population that was not studied in the original journal article?

(d)    Look carefully at the measures or tasks that the researchers used in the original journal article – does the press release accurately describe those measures or tasks and what they are designed to test? What do you think about those measures or tasks? Are they good (e.g. reliable and valid) measures or tasks, or are there problems with those measures or tasks?

(e)    Are there any alternative, rival explanations for the results of the study? Did the researchers try to rule out these rival explanations or not? If rival hypotheses can explain the data, are these rival explanations more parsimonious than the explanation given in the press release?

(f)      Do the authors of the original journal article state any limitations about their research? Does the press release discuss these limitations correctly?

(g)    Are there any warning signs of pseudoscience in the press release? Are there any signs of bias in either the press release or the journal article?

(h)    Are there any other ways in which the press release is misleading? Do you think the press release is an accurate summary of the original research paper? If not, why not?

The press has mispresented the factual errors of the findings of the two doctors. The press released that there was a difference between all the extroverts and in the introverts. In the report given by the two doctors, they have specifically categorized those two groups into low income and high income. That is where their research indicates the difference. They concluded from the facts from the study of the spending of the people for over twelve months that those that who are low-income extroverts tend to spend much money on their status than low-income introverts (Landis & Gladstone, 2017). The report shows that the high-income introverts and the high-income extroverts show no much difference in the spending activities. The press release tries to depict that the extroverts spend a lot of their income to status-oriented items so that they can make friends which is not the said in the report. The report says that the people that live on low income spend the money on purchases that are perceived to be of high status because they do that to restore their self-integrity feelings. That is, they are compensating for the self-deficit that they feel. This claim of the press that the extroverts spend their income on materials for status is just correlational to the data that was collected because this data cannot be used to show why they do that.
The inference that has been derived between the spending of the low-income extroverts on status material and the fact that they are extrovert has come to be due to the extent that the two variables are related. The press indicated that a survey was done for twelve months on the people that were being studied on factors such as personality, employment, their income, and their age. This is the same way factors that the researchers used to do their research. These measures used in the survey were the best that they could use for the study since they were able to access their bank records and how they spend their money and know what kind of stuff that they buy. In the results that were found there are no rival explanations that were concluded. The interaction between income and extraversion always led to the way people status spent. In the article, the authors state that they faced the limitation by having samples that are non-representative and also getting data that is cross-sectional thus making their study a little bit hard. In the press release, they did not mention that the authors were faced with any kind of limitations while they were conducting their study. They just concentrate on the methods and the conclusions that were drawn from the study.
There were signs of pseudoscience in the press release they believe that if one is an extrovert, they are bound to waste their money to build their status and make friends and introverts should not be concerned that introversion is a problem as science has proved otherwise. There are no signs of biases in the report. The authors wrote the results that they got from the study that they did and also the press released the reports as they understood them. The press release is false and does not portray what is in the report that was written the doctors. The press release sa...
