Tiered instruction and support programs are often implemented on a school or district-wide level. Response to Intervention (RTI) and Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) are common programs that provide a framework for assessment, delivery of instruction, provision of supports, and guidelines for referrals for eligibility in special education. The law requires that teams document efforts to support students in general education settings before they can be referred for special education evaluation. Not all students who struggle have a documented disability or meet eligibility requirements. Teachers and staff must address screening and assessment to identify the needs of students and make data-driven decisions regarding delivery of instruction, needed supports, and referrals when necessary for additional supports and services. RTI is a framework that includes general supports for all students, supports that are more specific for at-risk students, and identification of students who need interventions that are more intensive.
Select a grade level “Class Profile” relevant to your field of study and imagine you are the classroom teacher for these students. Review the profile and formulate a small group of students with whom you will implement RTI strategies. Using this group as an example, create notes that can be used to provide an introduction to the RTI for new educators.
Within your presentation, provide:
1. An overview of RTI and MTSS, including an explanation of the tiers and how these systems can be used to enhance and adapt instruction.
2. An explanation of the role of the child study team.
3. A discussion and examples of the types of data collected throughout the RTI process.
4. An explanation of what factors determine appropriate student placement within the RTI tiers. Refer to your example student group to illustrate specific ideas.
5. An explanation of how the RTI model can help meet the needs of students without disabilities and as a means of adapting instruction prior to evaluating students for a disability.
6. Five examples of research-based intervention strategies that you will use with students in your example student group who are struggling in English language, arts, or mathematics. Include justification for each intervention strategy.
7. Description of the data that would be collected as part of implementing the research-based intervention strategies. Explain how this data could be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the RTI strategies and how this information could be used as justification for testing for possible special education eligibility.
Support your presentation with a minimum of three scholarly resources.

Overview of RTI and MTSS
RTI is an essential structured framework specifically meant to address struggling students. It embraces high-quality interventions and instructions based on different levels called tiers. In tier 1, the students should be exposed to effective screening and classroom instruction. For those in Kindergarten, it is necessary to ensure the students reach their goals and the targeted interventions match their special needs. Approximately 80 % of students in tier 1 are expected to meet the established goals (Jimerson, Burns & VanDerHeyden, 2015). The intensity in tiers 2 and 3 is high since the students are heavily struggling. Tier three embraces individualized intervention, while that of 2 focuses on supplementary instructions. Tier 2 is at 15 % while 1 is at 5% intervention (Jimerson, Burns & VanDerHeyden, 2015).
RTI comprises data-driven decision-making, monitoring the student's performance frequently, universal screening, and a multi-tiered system. On the other hand, MTSS is a specialized model that focuses on adequate data to solve the existing problems by addressing non-academic and academic issues (Jimerson, Burns & VanDerHeyden, 2015). Moreover, it is essential since it focuses on adequate support among the students. Nevertheless, MTSS and RTI share common similarities, such as embracing high-quality instruction and delivering continuum support and growth. However, the only difference is that RTI is utilized to identify the academic issues among the students; MTSS is wide since it also addresses emotional complexities. Therefore, based on the identified characteristics, RTI and MTSS are adequately used to enhance and adapt instruction.
Role of Child Study Team
The child study team is essential and comprises speech specialists, learning disability teacher consultants, social workers, and school psychologists. The core role of the team is to promote effective evaluation of the students who are experiencing behavioral and learning difficulties (Burns et al., 2016). They are also responsible for promoting specific designs which may help them address the identified problems. Additionally, the team is also responsible for determining whether a child should be offered special education or not. Therefore, the team is significant when it comes to determining the children's future.
Data Collected through RTI Process
RTI is heavily dependent on data since it is the data that determines the student classifications. Therefore, throughout the process, the data required include student performance, cognitive ability, IQ, and the student's historical records. In addition, the team needs to adequately evaluate the provided data since it helps determine whether the student is on track or not (Tichá & Abery, 2018).
