Developing Cognitively Appropriate Instructional Activities Research
A classroom is comprised of students at varying levels of cognitive development; therefore, a one-size-fits-all approach will not meet all of the students’ learning needs. Differentiating instruction with cognitive development stages in mind helps ensure all students learning needs are addressed.
For this assignment, use the Cognitive Development Activities template to create three standards-based instructional activities. Refer to Piaget’s stages of cognitive development theory, Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, or Kohlberg’s theory of moral development to guide the design of your instructional activities.
Part 1: Activity Template
Complete the “Cognitive Development Activities” template and provide three examples to address the following in each:
Grade level and subject area
Activity: Explain the activity for your content area.
Differentiation: Explain how you would change this activity for a student with a higher cognitive level and a lower cognitive level in order to support learning for all students.
Part 2: Reflection
In 250-500 words, summarize and reflect on how each activity influences and supports students’ varying levels of cognitive development. Explain why this is important to understand and how you will apply it to your future professional practice.
Support your findings with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Cognitive Development Activities
Part 1: Template
Below is the development of three examples of cognitive activities of children to assist with their learning.
Example 1
Grade level and subject area
Mathematics grade 3
Activity
Have the students take polls on their peers’ favorite meals and create graphs to illustrate their results.
Differentiation
(cite theorist where appropriate)
When students take polls of the meals and graphically represent their data, they will be able to understand concrete situations, quantity, and space (Ghazi et al., 2016). Students with a higher cognitive level would be encouraged to take more than ten polls. In comparison, those with lower cognitive level would be advised to take at least three polls.
Example 2
Grade level and subject area
English literature grade 6
Activity
Completing crossword puzzles with vocabulary words.
Differentiation
(cite theorist where appropriate)
Literature students can learn best by filling puzzles (Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences) In the activity, students with low cognitive levels may require extra time to process and think through before solving the puzzle requirements(Ghazi et al., 2016).
Example 3
Grade level and subject area
Social studies grade 5
Activity
Introduce the students to diverse cultural books and allow them to read the various stories before introducing them to acts such as kindness exhibited by characters. Also, illustrate different cultures and believes held by a specific group of people.
Differentiation
(cite theorist where appropriate)
The activity incorporates socio-emotional learning to the students and enables them to develop kindness to others and as well, the awareness of diversity, which supp...
