The response papers as a whole are designed to reflect on the church in its past, present, and future encounters with the broader culture. For this paper, the focus will be on the church's past (the present and future aspects of the church's interactions with culture are the subjects of future papers). With that in mind, select one time period from the church's history (ancient, Middle Ages, Reformation, modern, etc.).
From within this time period, select an important theme that might characterize the time period;
Summarize the theme's primary characteristics;
Evaluate it using Niebuhr's "Christ and Culture" paradigm (for example, which paradigm most closely describes the dynamics of the theme); and
Describe this theme's continuing importance today.
Please note: This is a response paper, not a research paper. As a response paper, you are reflecting on the theme or idea you have identified and drawing out the implications of its continuing importance. As a response paper, it is not simply meant to summarize the material, but rather interact with it critically, drawing your own conclusions. Since this a response paper, you should not be turning to outside resources but using the texts (and lesson summaries) assigned for class. If you quote from, indirectly refer to, or paraphrase material from the texts, it should be cited with in-text notation (see MLA formatting guidelines). Since you will not be using sources beyond our texts, there is no need to create a Works Cited page as long as your references are clearly identified (e.g., Short Introduction, 333, or Atlas, 55, or The Reformation ppt).

The Reformation Period
From the ancient to the modern world, the church has always played a significant role in shaping society's morals. Today, the church is shaped to voice God's truth and shape society's views when it fails to align with God's will. Since its inception, the church has transformed in various stages. This response piece shall look at the Reformation period and the underlying theme of change that characterized this period.
Before the reformation period, the church was conservative and little was done to challenge the status quo. Church services were characterized by priests performing miracles of transubstantiation, prayer sessions were powerful, believers made pilgrimages, holidays marked by religious festivals, and the whole world filled with supernatural beings. In the church setting, believers held the idea of providence and that nothing happened without divine intervention. Also, diseases and plagues were understood as God's punishment for the sinful. Nearly everyone believed that the world was a few thousand years old, and the end was nigh. As for the clergy, they played a critical role in censorship of the press and keeping the government of the day to order (Dowley 29). In an environment where there was no internet or radio, the pulpit acted as the source of information. Church sessions discussed theology and deliberated on critical matters such as economics, current affairs, and politics. Put together, the church acted as a binding tool in society. The church completely took center stage of lives and permeated every aspect of the society, including education.
However, towards the end of the 15th century, the world began to experience change. These changes can be attributed to increased knowledge and intelligence. The reformation period sparked changes politically, economically, and socially. There was a surge in the number of thinkers who challenged the status quo and rattled the minds of many to change their perspective on the then-current state of affairs. The reformation period also grows, increased growth and migration to the cities (Dowley 25). In these new settings, people felt unchained from the rigid religious doctrines and were open to challenging the status quo. The existing intellectual atmosphere even led to inventions such as the printing press.
