Problem-Mapping Dialogue Reflection Paper
Working with and in a group has its challenges because people are different. However, people fail to realize that it is the diversity that helps a group attend to its tasks better. People with similar behaviors and attitudes often never get things done because they will agree with everything that it said. Diversity makes sure that people differ, debate, and counter each other’s argument. This produces results that are all round in that the results will have considered different perspectives of a topic. However, there are always challenges associated with running a group. There is the issue of objectivity and people letting their personal issues get in the way of business and hence the need to have a facilitator. In our group, we did experience some issues, but credit should be directed to the facilitators who managed to get the group back to the initial discussion occasionally. But for a group to work effectively, it takes the effort of every member regardless of their role. With each member committed towards the group’s goals, much can be achieved.
The problem-mapping dialogue for our group was direct in that we went straight to what we were supposed and expected to do. With a topic on technology, it may seem like one does not have to do much because everything can be easily found on the internet. However, we realized that we had to do a lot of work because relying on the internet led us to some conspiracy theories which we often found to be baseless. I will give credit to the facilitators who made sure that we always had some clear goals and questions that guided us. Every time we met, we always had some questions and prompts that made sure we went straight to the topic and never diverted. One challenge I noticed here is getting everyone involved. One of the responsibilities of a facilitator is to “attempt to include all participants in the discussion.” However, this was challenging because of the different personalities people have. Some of the members talked more than others while the introverts often found themselves with a lot left on their plate.
