" Side conversations can be enormously valuable. Conducted properly, they allow teams to work together smoothly and efficiently - to trade opinions, exchange information, and extent influence." (HBR, 2019)
Side conversations can be of great benefit when there is an important decision to be made or whenever reviewing any topics. Side conversations can help review important details that sometimes could be missed. I work in the banking /investments industry and I am a lower employee compared to the board of members of the corporate. Side conversations do affect, our work but not as it would in comparison to higher management. Side conversation help us understand different policies so that we could proactively ask the right questions or to provide feedback to improve the decision for the change. In my industry, side conversations are usually beneficial to the people involved in a specific office, side conversations often deepens relationship between coworkers and helps us be more inclusive and diverse. We often discuss decisions made by top management and brainstorm about the most beneficial way to implemented on our daily activities by finding common ground among coworkers.
"One of the most destructive kinds of off-line conversation happens after a decision has been made but hasn't worked out. These almost always involve venting by members who disagreed with the decision, and they serve no constructive purpose" (HBR, 2019)
In my industry external stakeholders tend to be impacted by the side conversations through the customer service received. Everyone is supposed to follow the same guidelines and rules, some are clear and easy to follow while others can be hard to interpret or are a new topic to the employee. Side conversations fund to have different outcomes depending on the points of view of the people involved. Different offices tend to interpret changes on policies or guidelines differently, because of that external stakeholders (Customers) tend to receive or perceive things being done differently at different offices. This can cause misunderstandings and stakeholders tend to feel that some employees are giving them preferential treatment or a hard time.
In conclusion, side conversations can greatly benefit a meeting because there are more points of view discussed. Big corporations need to have tools that allow other employees to provide feedback or clarification so that they all proactively act or provide the same service across all departments. Side conversations can help save time by allowing board members to focus on the specific topic of the meeting across different departments instead of agreeing or disagreeing on different opinions.
