Module VII Readings
Health and emotional issues related to sexual identity and orientation will be examined as they relate to ethnic and cultural factors, health status, academic achievement and high-risk behaviors. School nurses must provide holistic care and advocate for ALL students.
It has become commonplace for students to attend school while pregnant and parenting. Some of these students have complex physical, social and emotional needs that impair mental and physical well-being as well as academic success. The school nurse must have a good understanding of health issues that can occur during adolescent pregnancies, as well as emotional and developmental issues affecting pregnant and parenting teens.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5):
(1) Examine health-related barriers to learning for diverse student populations comprised of intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and medically fragile and complex needs.
(2) Analyze federal and state legislation related to child protection, adolescent rights to privacy, and the health and nursing care of special populations of students in school.
(3) Analyze evidence-based screening tools and interventional strategies in the early recognition and treatment of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral problems in children and adolescents.
(4) Integrate the principles of health promotion, population health, care coordination, interprofessional collaboration, and cultural competency in reducing health-related barriers to learning.
(5) Examine the potential causes of, and the health, cultural, social, and behavioral effects of risk behaviors, violence, trauma, abuse, and neglect on children and adolescents.
Module Learning Outcomes (MLOs; B, D, E, G):
(B) Analyze federal and state laws related to child protection, adolescent rights to privacy, and the health and nursing care of special populations of students in school.
(D) Apply the principles of health promotion, and cultural competency in reducing barriers to learning for all students.
(E) Extrapolate the social and environmental contexts as they relate to sexual health, pregnancy and parenting, and the subsequent effects on health and academic success.
(G) Apply evidence-based strategies, to facilitate early recognition and interventions to mediate the effects of substance abuse, crisis; violence; health risk behaviors and childhood trauma, in helping students achieve optimum health and academic success.

Surprising:
* I was surprised to learn that the US has a higher teenage pregnancy rate than most high-income countries, even though this pregnancy rate has been on the decline since the 1990s.
* I was also surprised to learn that half of all new sexually transmitted infections (STIs) incidents occur in adolescents. I was aware that the rate of STI infections among adolescents is high, but I did not know it was this high.
Salient:
* What was most notable about the first point is the absence of a discussion or mention of the role of school nurses in reducing teenage pregnancy rates. It would be interesting to establish the school nurse's role in reducing teenage pregnancies since the 1990s.
* It was notable that despite the high STI incidence among adolescents, most adolescents have limited knowled...
