Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes (GD) is the onset or initial identification of glucose intolerance throughout pregnancy and is among the most prevalent pregnancy problems. The effects of GD’s unfavorable pregnancy outcomes extend to the mothers’ infants after and during pregnancy. The risk of miscarriage, hypertensive problems, macrosomia, surgical delivery, and postpartum hemorrhage is often higher in pregnant women affected by GD, and the likelihood that they will suffer diabetes mellitus 28 years later ranges from 2.6% to 70% (Ottanelli et al., 2022). Children born to these women are more likely to suffer from large-for-gestational-age, preterm births, neonatal respiratory failure disorder, hypoglycemia, and altered glucose uptake in adolescence.
Clinical characteristics of gestational diabetes are typically described as a fluctuating proportion of glucose intolerance that starts or is noticed throughout gestation, typically after the twenty-fourth week of pregnancy (Ottanelli et al., 2022). It is sometimes referred to as carbohydrate intolerance, which starts throughout pregnancy and causes hyperglycemia of varying degrees.
The diagnosis or screening tests for gestational diabetes are the glucose challenge screen (GCS) and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
