(2018), gestational diabetes threatens the life of the mother and baby's lives and can have short- and long-term effects on their health. As shown in the graph below, gestational diabetes is on the rise, with the rate in 2020 being 7.8 per 100 births, up from 6.0 per 100 births in 2016 (Gregory & Ely, 2022).
It is recommended that pregnant women get screened for gestational diabetes. However, there are controversies around appropriate gestational diabetes screening and its effects on pregnancy outcomes (Rafii et al., 2017).
The risk of gestational diabetes increases with being overweight or obese before pregnancy. Other risk factors for gestational diabetes include prediabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, and gestational diabetes in previous pregnancy (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2022). Wang et al. (2017) indicate that exercising during pregnancy reduces gestational weight gain and the associated gestational diabetes. In addition, Martis et al. (2018) reveal that dietary modification can regulate glycemia and ultimately reduce the risk of gestational diabetes.
Culture plays a significant role in gestational diabetes, and understanding the role of culture in health can help nurses provide improved care. According to Su et al. (2021), culture affects health beliefs and practices and can contribute to or reduce the risk of gestational diabetes. For instance, Su et al.
