      As an opportunity to earn an additional 10 points to your final grade in this course. Students can write a 300-500 reflection on any German film or television program made from 1945 to the present. At the bottom of this assignment page are a few recommended films that you can choose that best encapsulate key themes and topics in the course. The requirements for the films are as follows:

  • A visual media source that has at least a 60-minute run time.
  • Is both set in and at least partially filmed on location in Germany
  • Must have roughly 70% of the story take place in Germany from 1945 to the present.
  • Must showcase a specific aspect of German architecture, culture, environment, history, or landscape as an essential part of the story.

After watching your chosen German film/tv show your reflection should address the following:

  • A brief summary of the plot and premise of your chosen film.
  • Has to be set in contemporary Germany (from 1945 to the present).
  • How does your film incorporate German life into its narrative? What role do supporting characters, the surrounding landscape, or urban environment play in the story's plot? 
  • Describe any notable German landmarks or locations that are featured in your film. 
  • Describe any scenes from your chosen entertainment that you feel are authentic or exaggerated in its portrayal of Germany. 
  • What aspects of German life do the filmmakers interact with most in their portrayal of the state?

A Coffee in Berlin
A Coffee in Berlin is a movie that was directed by German film director and screenwriter Jan Ole Gerster. The setting is in the capital of Germany, Berlin, and it is about the life of the protagonist, Niko, a young man in his twenties who seems not to have a well-defined purpose in life. He was studying law before dropping out of college, which shows what an intelligent young man he is. The movie opens with a scene where he wakes up, in his girlfriend’s house, at the break of dawn. His rather genteel girlfriend offers him a cup of coffee, which he declines for no apparent reason. Ironically, he spends the rest of the day chasing after an elusive cup of coffee. He spends most of the day with his friend Matze. Later, he spends the night in a hospital where he had accompanied an elderly man he had met in a bar. In the morning, he learns of the man’s death and a few moments later, he manages to lay his hands on a cup of coffee. Watching the movie rubber-stamped my perception of Germans as genteel people who respect laws to a fault, observe punctuality, and value family and the community.
The movie is generally about the daily lives of the common people, so to speak. The director ably uses the cast to depict the daily routine of many Germans’ lives and the various challenges they have to contend with. The protagonist, Niko, for instance, seems lost and confused.
