The Enlightenment in France has destroyed all the scaffolding on civilization. In the end, the Reign of Terror saw those who started the French Revolution, falling prey to the guillotine themselves. Hence Napoleon’s statement (movie): “I found the crown of France in the gutter and placed it on my own head.” Write a two-page review of the movie. Include a cover sheet and reference page. The narrator presents the two sides of the Napoleon story. For some, he is a hero and to others a destroyer of nations. What does he mean by that? In what ways did he save France? Did his actions undo the Enlightenment?
In your review, consider the following questions:
How did Napoleon’s crowning of himself as emperor spell the end of the tradition and its accompanying problems started by Charlemagne allowing himself to be crowned by the Pope in 800 CE?
What drove Napoleon to conquer most of Europe, and at what price?
What is your appraisal of Napoleon? Hero or Villain? Consider his original removal from the throne and his return. What does this say about the French people’s pride in his accomplishments?

Napoleon’s crowning of himself in 1804 marked the end of the tradition and its problems because he undermined the authority of the Pope. When Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne in 800 CE, it depicted the power of the church over rulers. Therefore, when Napoleon decided to crown himself, it is deducible that the Papal power relative to that of rulers was significantly reduced, hence marking the end of the tradition. Napoleon’s action showed that the Pope and the church were subservient to the empire. I believe Napoleon’s statement, “I found the crown of France in the gutter and placed it on my own head,” means that he found the country in ruins and decided to rule it, and that his power was not accorded by the papacy.
The documentary shows that Napoleon was extremely hungry...
