WWI and WWII have changed the history of the world in significant ways. The two events have remained an area of interest. This essay will analyze the two wars in terms of their causes, effects, similarities and differences.
World War I
The cause of WWI included imperialism, militarism, and nationalism. Before WWI, several European countries had made competing for imperialistic claims majorly in Africa (Anievas, 2013). The colonies offered raw materials for the European countries. Confrontation emerged regarding which country had the right to control the vital resources. Militarism emerged when the European countries began to invest in their military capabilities. The race to increase warships and the size of the army drive the countries into the war (Anievas, 2013). Regarding nationalism, each country tried to prove its dominance and power. This contributed to increased tensions which culminated in the WWI.
The immediate effect of WWI was the loss of lives. More people were left homeless and others injured (Kesternich, Siflinger, Smith & Winter, 2014). At the same time, the war left altered the economic balance of the world, where European countries were deep in debt, while the U.S. became the main creditor. The war also transformed social life where women could engage in business while the men were involved in the war. Further, the war boosted research efforts in technology as the countries sought better means of gaining an advantage over the enemies.
World War II
The rise of Hitler to power was the major cause of WWII. He capitalized on the unbalanced Treaty of Versailles which had earlier forced Germany to end WWI (Schaap & Fresen, 2000). At the same time, the world was experiencing a depression that caused desperate situations in the majority of the European nations. The two conditions formed a perfect opportunity for Hitler to ascend into power. Hitler promised to restore Germany honor, which many believed had been mortgaged during the Treaty of Versailles. Germany then began producing military weapons, with more Germans joining military joining programs.
