Tadeusz Trepkowski designed the NIE! Poster in 1952. In particular, “NIE” means “NO.” NIE! Poster was among the first graphic designs in Poland after the Second World War. The material of the poster is lithograph, and its measurements are 39 3/8” * 27 5/8” (100*70 cm). The NIE! Poster shows a silhouette of a falling bomb through which one can see a dark sky and a building. In most cases, when explosives are used during wars, they lead to the destruction of properties and kill many people. The NIE! Poster shows the devastation of the Second World War in Poland cities.
Based on the lecture, many works of graphic designs were influenced by real-life occurrences. In other words, they were an actual representation of what was happening. Trepkowski wanted to describe how war can affect a city and the destruction that weapons such as bombs can cause. On that note, the designer looked for a way of relating the Second World War to the destruction of buildings in Poland. The war significantly changed Poland’s identity since the Soviets found a way to control the country. Soviets installed a communist government, which ruled Poland until 1990. Although the war made it difficult for individuals to pursue a graphic design career, Trepkowski managed to find a way of communicating with people using posters.
The NIE! Poster was used to show the devastation of Poland after the Second World War. In Polish culture, posters were very crucial, and they did not just decorate the streets. Instead, they showed artists’ genuine expression of their feelings towards various situations. For example, Trepkowski portrayed the adverse effects of bombs on cities since they destroyed buildings. Specifically, NIE! Poster was an expression of the Second World War horrors. The reason why NIE! Poster was used is to testify the redemptive influence of artwork. Overall, it marked a new beginning of rebuilding what was destroyed by the Second World War.
