Goodbaby International Holdings Ltd. is a global parenting merchandise company founded in 1989 by Mr Zhenghuan Song in Kunshan, China. The company serves hundredsof homes through research, design, and innovation, marketing, manufacture, and sale of juvenile products. In the last 31 years, the company has developed from a modest school-affiliated factory on the verge of bankruptcy to a global leader in the juvenile products market, with $2 billion in revenue and more than 10,000 employees from over 40countries. Goodbaby International owns and operates eight R&D centres in the United States, Europe, and China and sales, marketing, and distribution administrative centres in more than ten countries. The group has held a dominant position and maintained a No. 1 share for juvenile products like strollers, child restraining, systems, and the biggest market share for 13 years old in Europe, the USA and China (Goodbaby International, n.d.).
Product development (research, development, and design) is their forte, but the company covers all bases. It creates, researches, develops, manufactures, markets, and distributes strollers, child car seats, cribs, bicycles, and tricycles. Currently, the company has almost 10,000 active product patents (Chesbrough & Zhu, 2021). GB has become a household name in North America, Europe, and China in a world where brand loyalty is scarce.
NPD/NSD Processes and Critical Analysis at Goodbaby
Goodbaby pioneered an inside-out open innovation model that allows it to sell products under its own brands while also selling them under the brands of local and foreign clients. They established a solid vertical and horizontal integration of the business, allowing them to take the lead in the juvenile durable goods industry. In addition, they developed a comprehensive and well-known brand portfolio, a global sales and service network, an innovative research and development system, technical development facilities, and one-stop manufacturing capabilities. This has made strategic acquisitions to diversify its portfolio with other durable goods firms.
The decision to invest much more resources in R&D in order to establish strong product differentiation and enhanced performance is the main focus in this situation. Following initial challenges as an OEM, creator Zhenghuan Song opted to follow the ODM and OPM models instead, engaging directly with companies in the United States and Europe and quickly achieving market dominance (Chesbrough & Zhu, 2021).To reiterate, GB's popularity and strength originate from its well-organized production control and supply chain management system. Rather than relying on branding, it depends on the product's actual excellence to speak for itself. One could argue that the company had primarily focused on baby strollers and made them a superb product before developing a business strategy around them.
