Like many views in America, the discussion always finds a way to tilt into a head-to-head between liberals and conservatives. Marijuana, instead of permission to use it, has been a polarizing issue in America for the past two decades. Granted, the love or hate for marijuana stretches across the political boundaries of conservatives and liberals. However, the history of slavery and questionable laws from both camps means that a discussion regarding marijuana will always turn political. My opinion is that the debate should learn more about science and the substantial amount of evidence collected on marijuana. The use of marijuana can have numerous benefits for children and adults in treating diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s.
Addiction is one of the reasons the legalization of marijuana is frowned upon. It is inarguable that any form of the drug can cause addiction and dependence when misused. On marijuana, it is estimated that addiction among teens who have legalized it is 25% higher than those who have not. This view is compelling considering the likelihood of teens and young children having access to marijuana. However, if I believe this view, it only exaggerates the flaws in the U.S. policies regarding medicine. The argument is correct; however, there is the possibility that a lack of medical prescription and education is the main reason people misuse marijuana. Also, there is enough research to suggest that marijuana can help address the opioid crisis in the U.S. CITATION cor19 \l 1033 (cornerstoneofrecovery, 2019).
