EEO In the Global Context
"Identify three challenges for using Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) law as a tool for improving racial and ethnic harmony in the global labor market?"
The Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) law is associated with equity in employment opportunities based on meritocracy, but in reality different people do not have the same opportunities. The law prohibits employment discrimination, but there are more subtle forms of discrimination that segregate people into certain types of work. Stereotypes and biases often inform decisions consciously and unconsciously to hire some groups over others, which then make it more difficult to eradicate workplace discrimination. The exclusion of minorities, restrictive laws and policies and the failure to deal with the broad patterns of discrimination make it difficult for the EEO to improve the racial and ethnic harmony in the global labor market.
The EEO laws are meant to offer protection against employment discrimination, but there is exclusion of minorities from the mainstream society, where they are less likely to be employed than whites even when qualified. Minorities are treated as outsiders even when generations have been in western countries such as German and are fluent in German (Poggioli, 2009). There are workplace policies, practices and structures that make it hard for minorities to be in formal employment as they are excluded from the workplace. Minorities are invincible to the mainstream society and there are those dismiss that there is discrimination in the society and are unwilling to listen to any suggestions on how to ensure equity and equality in the labor market.
Even as EEO law highlights the need for equality, there are still restrictive laws and policies that disproportionately affect immigrants and those from an immigrant back...
