Gender Stereotypes in Western World
Globally there has been a concern about issues of sexual minorities and heteronormative system of gender identities as a matter of powerful experiment these days. Activists and intellectuals have begun arguing about granting procedural equity of opportunity to everyone regardless of gender. Western cultures differentiate people in terms of sexual attractions like bisexual, gay, and straight, while other cultures categorize groups based on position preference in anal sex and gender role representation (Thorne 153). On the other hand, gender stereotypes are the beliefs that individuals have about the character of females and males, and it varies over culture and time. To what extent does gender stereotype exist in today's current world? According to scholars, gender refers to female or male characteristics, including roles, behaviors, or norms associated with being a man or woman. Different researches have shown stability of gender stereotype roles about how men and women differ despite the changes in western culture. (Vincent 40). This essay will explore the consequences of sexualizing gender stereotypes and how sexualization information leads to body image concerns. Nevertheless, the stereotypes have a far reach through influence on peer gender harassment, academic achievement, and violence on women (Papadakis 60). I would also focus on various stereotypes and their perception in society.
Gender stereotypes view women as more communal and submissive while men are more competitive, ambitious, and assertive than other members of the other sex. It is more difficult for women to convince others that they have the necessary leadership skills since gender stereotypes are based on perceptions. This interconnection represents a cross-cultural and well-established gender stereotype (Thorne 147). Theories have emerged, for instance, an approach on social roles that suggests that gender stereotype roots women as homemakers and men as the breadwinners as the traditional primary role. Typically roles have changed, and so has stereotype shift too. In western countries, women's roles have drastically changed since most women are developing their careers, making it more acceptable for them to have jobs than in the past. The contemporary woman sees herself as more masculine though people still view masculinity as a trait for men instead of women. The persistence of female commonality and male masculinity stereotypes suggests how deeply rooted cultural beliefs reflect that men are best suited for leadership roles, unlike women (Ellemers 280). Due to this, women tend to display confident masculinity to overshadow this kind of unfit leadership role.
Commitment and career choice are influenced by role responsibility and gender stereotypes; consequently, there is increased gender division in the workforce. There are fewer advancement opportunities and lower pay in jobs considered women, unlike those of men. This kind of gender stereotype is seen in the hijra community where the men who are not men assume a woman's role and perform tasks considered to be of women, like taking care of the home.
