Fearless Girl
The artwork I found on my field trip is the Fearless Girl. The artwork is a sculpture of a girl standing at a height of 50 inches across the NYSE building in Manhattan, New York City. The sculpture was made by Kristen Visbal, and is one of the most popular artworks commissioned in recent times. Fearless Girl underlines the importance of women in leadership while promoting gender equality and female empowerment.
The inspiration behind Visbal’s sculpture was the need for sensitization on the role of women in leadership in the wake of low performance of American corporate institutions in terms of gender diversity. A recent study had earlier on indicated that women held very few positions in corporate boardrooms. In response, Fearless Girl was installed a day before the 2017 International Women’s Day. The statue portrays a girl with both hands on her hips and the chin pointing up to denote bravery and fearlessness.
