This semester has presented me with a lot of knowledge regarding gender, intersectionality, art, and society. The information has made me change the perceptions that I used to have regarding these concepts. The knowledge is applicable in daily life because it outlines how these concepts relate to daily life. This essay will focus on how my perception of these concepts has changed throughout the semester.
Many people believe that one has to declare their gender by writing their name down on official documents, such as birth certificates or passports. Such is most likely based on the assumption that there are only two genders out there, with no room for anything else. Many institutions do not recognize non-binary gender identities. For instance, cinematics considers masculine to be male and feminine to be female (Jones, 2003). The concept of gender is more complex than I thought. It is not simply male or female. Some people are not even aware of their gender identity yet. They are referred to as cisgender. The term refers to someone who identifies with the sex that was assigned to them at birth. Some people identify with neither one nor both genders. These people are called non-binary. For example, a person whose sex had been assigned male at birth but feels more comfortable identifying as agender, neutrois, or aporagender. These are umbrella terms referring to several non-binary identities that would be transmasculine.
My perception of intersectionality has also changed a lot. The semester has provided new information about the concept that I did not know of. Such information has clarified my understanding of the concept. The term “intersectionality” refers to the study of intersections between different disenfranchised groups or groups of minorities. In theory, intersectionality appears to be a good thing. Talking about how different groups interact with each other from an analytical standpoint can be a great way to approach subjects that have been considered taboo before. However, intersectionality seems prone to abuse by less intelligent people who see the subject to find excuses for their actions rather than acknowledging them properly.
Intersectionality relates to feminism in that it is an example of how women’s experiences are different for women following their ethnicity, class, and sexuality. For instance, cyberfeminism has changed women’s perception in society. M...
