Introduction
Water plays a significant role in maintaining a balance between body fluids, digestion of food, transportation of nutrients, and the creation of saliva. As a result, clean drinking water is significant to the survival efforts of people. However, water in New York City passes through water pipes that were installed in the late 1800s and early 1950s. The pipes have aged and undergo rapid corrosion that adds harmful chemicals in the water. Despite repairing them, pipe bursts up are common in New York City. Since water is crucial to human beings' survival, the old water pipes in New York City must be replaced by steel pipes.
The Problem
New York City's water distribution network is made up of old pipes that add unwanted flavors and serious chemical-related health risks to the water. 80% of underground water pipes in New York City were installed in the 1800s, and 10% were installed in the 1950s to cater to population growth (Barlow, p 44). The majority of those pipes were made using lead and iron, and the corrosion associated with them is responsible for causing stomach problems, hemochromatosis, diabetes, and even cancer. Other than their bad condition, the city experiences frequent incidences of water pipe burst because they cannot hold water moving at high pressure (Konstantinou p 535).
Proposed solution
This paper proposes the replacement of the old pipes with steel pipes. While steel pipes are expensive, they are strong and durable than all other water pipes.
