The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby is an intriguing novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The narrator is a character called Nick Carraway, who describes his experiences and adventures. The first chapter establishes the setting and context of the novel, and it also introduces the protagonist, Nick. The setting is during the years after the first world war. He describes his current situation, and that he moved from the Midwest to West Egg, located in Ney York, after the war to find work on Wall Street (Fitzgerald, 1991). Nick considers himself to be well off since he is from a wealthy family, and moves to a small house located in a posh neighborhood. His home is smaller in comparison to the large mansions around him, and one of his neighbors is Jay Gatsby. Nick is also invited to have dinner with his cousin, Daisy, who lives with her husband, Tom Buchanan, across the bay from Nick’s house. Tom is also a racist, has a marital affair, and he frequently argues with his wife.
The second chapter involves a conversation between Nick and Tom while on a train going to New York City. They discuss a location that Nick describes as the valley of ashes since everything in the area looks lifeless and gray. The location acts as a place where individuals who cannot succeed in life live. The valley of ashes has a sad and hopeless mood, and it is also symbolic of the failures of the American dream or to get wealth (Fitzgerald, 1991). Nick also describes an extensive billboard advertising a doctor’s services, and the character is the billboard is gazing down at the location. This is symbolic to God watching over an area. They stopped at their first destination, and Tom goes to meet his mistress Myrtle. His mistress is the wife of George Wilson (Fitzgerald, 1991). He manages to convince her to accompany them to New York City without Wilson noticing. They spent the rest of the day at a party that is hosted in an apartment that Tom purchased for his mistress in the city. A few friends also attend the party. The chapter reveals that Tom has a double life, and he also has violent tendencies since he also fights with Myrtle and breaks her nose.
Gatsby is introduced in the third chapter. Nick narrates how he watched different parties hosted in Gatsby’s house on all weekends, and then the servants would clean the house on Monday. The party is characterized by excess and wealthy, and a large band was also in attendance to play loud music.
