Elections are perhaps one of the most important tools for the expression of a democratic country. It allows the people to be able to express themselves by choosing their candidates who would protect their rights and pursue their cause. Despite this, however, recent circumstances affecting the world has made it more difficult for the masses to express their public sentiment. In fact, reports have said that the effects of the nationwide pandemic have a skewed effect favoring one political party in the United States against the other. In this article, the author would like to discuss the article Cassidy and Bajak (2020) and show why this issue affects him.
Absentee Voting in New York City
In the article written by Cassidy and Bajak (2020), the authors noted how the number of disenfranchised voters has increased due to absentee voting. On the one hand, this was caused by the inability of people to go to polling precincts due to the pandemic. On the other hand, however, the article also noted that the main reason for this was the shift towards a ‘mail-in’ voting wherein simple or unavoidable mistakes such as lateness, lack of signature, or inaccuracy of signatures has led to multiple ballots being rejected in the polls. In other words, this increased the number of absentee voters who are in danger of being disenfranchised since their votes were not accepted.
While the problem seems already complicated enough, the article further noted that this phenomenon could result in inequality between classes and political parties.
