The American Revolution
The American Revolution refers to a colonial revolt that transpired between 1765 and 1783, in which the British were defeated by the American Patriots organized in thirteen colonies. The colonies got help from the French and after gaining their independence, established the United States of America. While the revolution is recorded as having begun in 1775, there is a possibility that it began in the 1600s with the establishment of the various English colonial settlements with autonomous government.
The U.S, currently regarded as a superpower in terms of its financial and military might, had humble beginnings like many other countries. The country has undergone an evolution that ranged from simple exploration expeditions, to small settlements, a revolution and then radical economic development to attain its current status. While the Europeans explored what they termed as “the new world” prior to the 1600’s, this century was characterized by development of settlements and establishment of colonies. These colonies later became states. At the time, the European countries that mainly occupied the U.S included Britain, French, Netherlands, and Spain. The scramble to occupy the country was so high and the first successful takeover was Jamestown, currently Virginia, which was taken by the British settlers in 1607. Other settlements were also established during this time, like the Province of Maryland, the Connecticut Colony, and the New Haven Colonies, among others.
