In 1941 and 1945, Japan and the United States had fought bitterly and it is remembered to date. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Americans were not happy because of the Japanese raid into China, Manchuria, and French Indochina. The rapid industrialization of Japan required privilege access to raw material overseas. To Japan being a modern power meant to be a colonial power. Although Japan was not economically powerful to fight for a long period with the United States, Japan knew that attacking Pearl Harbor was a good approach and the short-run bet was fruitful. Thus it was inevitable that Japan became a colonial power. Nevertheless, the clash with the United States over the control of the Asian mainland was not inevitable.
Japan used its state power for economic development and to transform Korea for a short period. During this period Japan had decided to alter the nature of the Korean Government and the association of Korea to different societal classes (Gordon 148). The Japanese centralized bureaucratic style of governance was allocated to South Korea. They improved human capital through the development of education and invested in infrastructure extensively. Later the state that Japan constructed that is Korea became an effective economic factor. The government used bureaucratic abilities to undertake economic roles like collection of taxes, developing infrastructure, and participating in production (Gordon 123). This bureaucratic government progressed in post-world war II and after the war in Korea, prompt colonial industrialization of Japan to Korea made it possible for Japan to become a colonial power and head towards a cohesive-capitalists development (Gordon 123).
In the 1930s the United States was fighting to emerge from the great depression. Since Japan had surfaced from the depression period which started in 1926, it became easy to defeat the United States (Gordon 182). A lot of young soldiers from the countryside where the impacts of the great depression were severe were assembled into the Japanese Army (Gordon 182). The commitment of these young soldiers into the military and their efforts to expand the Japanese territory to accomplish economic stability can be analyzed. The Depression ended in mid-1930 in Japan.
Globally, this was a period when “free trade” was disregarded. The United States and Europe safeguarded their economic priorities in their colonies and domains of influence. These nations also sought to boost their economies increasing the tariffs and taxes, dumping goods and other forms of trade manipulations. Japan with their limited raw and natural resources wanted to adopt this strategy also. They used cutthroat practices to sell light industrial goods and textiles to East Asia and the United States, severely undercutting the manufacturers from Europe and Britain (Gordon 204). Additionally, Japan also improved all the sources of raw materials and industries it had established in Manchuria, Taiwan, and Korea. They also used increased tariffs to limit imports of the European and British industrial goods.
