Growing up in a Different Society

Essay Instructions:

For the second assignment you are asked to explore the theme of the first course unit, i.e., self and society are contiguous, by speculating how the dual aspects of your self might differ had you been raised in a different time or place. You can draw from the answers to your Twenty Statements Test, for example, to suggest how the “Me” might differ, or, similarly you can speculate how the Path Walk might have altered content had you walked it from a different experiential background.

Hint: It might prove helpful to identify a specific society and/or historical period in which to locate your speculated differences. For example, rather than growing up in China during the “One Child per Family” period you might imagine having been raised during the Cultural Revolution. Similarly, imagine that you had been raised in the United States during the Great Depression as compared with growing up in the aftermath of the “Great Recession.” Please know these two examples just occurred to me, and that you have much creative license to select the specifics for your speculations about your altered self. In fact, it’s probably best that you steer away from using either of my examples, especially in hopes of submitting a 3-point paper.

If I were born in the suburbs in the United States, I would have been more indulgent as a person. This assumption is based from Hofstede’s Six Cultural Dimensions, which shows that Chinese are more restra...
