Part 1
What was the new deal?
The new deal included programs that the newly elected President Franklin D. Roosevelt planned to enact to help alleviate the effects of the Great Depression. When Franklin D. Roosevelt assumed power, the United States was experiencing its worst kind of economic meltdown. The Great Depression had rendered people jobless, millions were starving, and the American banks were closing at a high rate. Franklin D. Roosevelt assumed power and having promised to help improve the economy, he was under pressure to implement measures to alleviate the effects of the Great Depression. The New Deal was thus conceived. It included projects and programs that he planned to implement during his tenure to help improve the lives of the Americans (Amadeo, 2019). The U.S. had been prosperous especially during the First World War, but the Great Depression robbed it off the majority of the wealth it had accumulated.
What new measures did Roosevelt take to relieve the effects of the Great Depression in America, and what was the effectiveness of these measures?
Roosevelt and his government had what they believed to be a perfect plan. This plan included several measures that were seen as the answer to the ailing economy.
The first thing Roosevelt did was to save the American banks. During the Great Depression, the America public rushed to retrieve their money from the banks. This greatly affected the banks and many were left vulnerable. Roosevelt thus declared what came to be known as the four-day bank holiday. The next thing he did was to speak to the Americans and urged them to trust the banks again. Many banks were saved by this initiative and stayed open.
The next measure was to end Prohibition. In the 1920s, Prohibition was a major issue and Americans were not allowed to buy beer. However, Roosevelt, with the help of Congress, decided to end Prohibition.
