Adolf Franz Karl Viktor Maria Loss was born in the Czech Republic. He was a defender of modern architecture and an Austrian architect introduced to the art of building early because his father worked as a stone mason. Loss went to the Royal and Imperial State College in Bohemia and attained his architecture education in Germany at the Technical University of Dresden between 1890 and 1893. His work was influenced by the Chicago School of Architecture and inspired by Louis Sullivan and the style of American architecture. He was part of the modern architectural movement associated with moving away from ornamentation and towards greater functionality.[Furján, Hélène. Adolf was famous for his controversial views on the use of ornament decorations in architecture and the design of buildings. His controversial essay, Ornament and Crime, argues that ornamentation in architecture is redundant, leading to the misuse of resources. It also acts as a sign of a primitive society, equivalent to a crime that needs to be eliminated. In this regard, Loss strongly insisted that architecture should be functional rather than ornamental. His designs and writings paved the way for the modernist movement in architecture in the 20th century. As a result, Loos's designs were composed of pure forms that were cost-effective and had practical advantages.
