Collaboration Café
Purpose
The purpose of the Collaboration Café is to encourage the meaningful application of course concepts, discuss advanced practice psychiatric and mental health nursing issues, and engage student leadership.
Course Outcomes
This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
CO 4: Apply ethical and legal principles to the healthcare needs and management of acutely ill psychiatric mental health patients across the lifespan (PO 5)

Initial posts are due to the discussion board by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Peer responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Students must post on a minimum of two separate days. A 10% late penalty will be imposed for discussions posted after the deadline Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT, regardless of the number of days late. NOTHING will be accepted after 11:59 p.m. MT on Sunday (i.e., the student will receive an automatic 0).

Initial Post
The depiction of psychotherapy in pop culture is varied; movies, television, and other media often portray specific stereotypes of clients, counselors, therapy settings, and content. In your initial post:
Locate a representation of psychotherapy in popular media. Suggestions include but are not limited to movies such as Good Will Hunting, Analyze This, A Beautiful Mind, or Antwon Fisher, and TV series including the Sopranos, Monk, Big Little Lies, or Mad Men. Your selection may include a positive or negative depiction of therapy and may or may not be realistic. Describe the psychotherapy setting portrayed in the selected movie or series.
Describe the stereotypes that are portrayed in the therapeutic relationship, setting, or content of the therapy sessions.
Describe the relationship depicted between the psychotherapist and the client. Does the provider demonstrate professionalism, ethical comportment, and/or therapeutic communication in client interactions? Explain your rationale.
Discuss the ways, if any, that any element related to ethnicity, religion, race, class, or cultural identity appeared to impact the client-therapist relationship.
Explain how popular culture depictions mental health treatment, specifically psychotherapy, depictions in popular culture might impact client and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) perceptions of psychotherapy as an effective treatment modality.

Perceptions of Psychotherapy in Popular Culture
Good Will Hunting depicts the therapeutic relationship between Dr. Sean Maguire, a therapist, and Will Hunting, a janitor. The film positively depicts therapy as an imperfect process that, over time, produces significant progress for the client. The therapy sessions in the movie take place in a basement office in a college and on a bench in a park. In the film, Will displays aggressive behavior and an inability to form and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships. He is also an underachiever, sabotaging his opportunities for successful careers and true love. In the therapy sessions, Will and his therapist explore his traumatic childhood and how it manifested in adulthood. Although the therapy process is complicated and seemingly futile during some sessions, Will eventually get some breakthrough and goes for what he wants.
The main stereotype portrayed in the therapeutic relationship in the film is that therapists cannot be trusted to maintain confidentiality. In the movie, Sean often discusses Will's condition with Lambeau without Will’s consent. Lambeau has a personal interest in Will because he helped keep him out of jail and is responsible for him. However, Sean is depicted as a therapist who infringes on his client’s right to confidentiality. According to Kramer et al. (2019), a lot of movies portray mental health professionals as individuals incapable of complying with professional codes of ethics. Yet, in reality, many mental health professionals comply with codes of ethics, such as patient confidentiality, as part of nurturing a therapeutic alliance.
