Dominant Cultures and Subcultures
Organizational culture adopts different dimensions, which include dominant cultures and subcultures. Dominant cultures represent the core values embraced by the majority in an organization (Baack, Chapter 2: Organizational Culture and Diversity, 2017). An example of the dominant culture is when an organization asks employees to embrace teamwork. Subcultures, on the other hand, emerge as an organization grows. They differentiate a subgroup from the dominant group. The groupings arise from having common problems, situations, and experiences.
Understanding the impact of culture is critical because it guides how to nurture a worthwhile environment. For instance, by understanding that culture can enhance employees’ loyalty and commitment, the management would endeavor to cultivate an environment that enhances employees’ satisfaction. In addition, understanding the impact of culture helps an organization establish ethical expectations (Baack, Chapter 2: Organizational Culture and Diversity, 2017).
