Women Underrepresentation in Corporate Leadership
“Do Female Top Managers Help Women to Advance? A Panel Study Using EEO-1 Records” by Donald Tomaskovic-Devey and Fidan Ana Kurtulus discusses how females in top leadership levels of an organization’s management help decrease challenges that hinder women to advance in their careers (Kurtulus & Tomaskovic-Devey, 2012). Notably, the article has enabled me to learn that female leaders promote women's job promotions. Since they understand what it takes to lead others in a male-dominated environment, they nurture fellow women and prepare them to take greater responsibilities in the workplace. As such, females in top leadership positions foster gender diversity by creating a path for fellow women to follow in career advancement.
I agree with the authors that females in top managerial levels help to decrease problems encountered by fellow women in career advancement (Kurtulus & Tomaskovic-Devey, 2012). They improve females’ job promotion and recruitment in top positions of leadership through mentorship of those in low job ranks, facilitating job retention, acting as good role models, and hiring more females in the company. In addition, I concur with the authors that women managers actively train other females so that they can gain appropriate skills, knowledge, and human capital that are necessary for job promotion to top managerial positions. Women leaders eliminate gender discrimination and perform lenient job evaluations of other females who are likely to be promoted. Furthermore, I agree that female managers improve women's recruitment via their networks outside the company.
In my opinion, the most significant idea that the authors have portrayed about women corporate leaders is that those who are visible as top managers are likely to weaken the traditional gender-based beliefs and stereotypes that undermine the possibility of females becoming leaders.
