Importance of having family involved in the treatment process for substance use disorders

There may be interdependence among family members because of close relationships, and taking into account family members in substance abuse treatment can be more effective. The family members may trigger substance abuse depending on the environment, but they can also handle the consequences of drug abuse. This highlights the need to improve interactions with families, since interventions affect the family system.

To deal with addiction and, there is structured treatment to cater for the mothers and make it easier for them to care for their children. Detoxification is undertaken first with the aim of dealing with substance abuse as they maintain active treatment. The interventions are unlikely to be successful if mothers with substance use disorders do not have the motivation to change.

Before relying on the differ levels of care, there is a need to assess the level of addiction and substance use disorder including testing and interviewing where possible. In cases of serious withdrawal symptoms then detox will be considered as a viable intervention before outpatient care, inpatient care or residential treatment. An individualized treatment plan informs the specific interventions to be undertaken to facilitate treatment and recovery.
