The Old Paris is no more, is an arguable true statement. It is gone due to neoliberalism and spectacle. Guy Debord condemns the spectacle of our society. Spectacle in Guy Debord’s context means overarching inclination towards images and consumerism. The spectacle is not an agglomeration of images or pictures, but a social relation among persons, which are mediated by images. This paper is a reflection of three articles that represent ideological, aesthetics, and philosophical occurrences, that often accompany urban evolution.
The old Paris has lost its features due to the spectacle society that we have. Spectacle, as presented by Debord, embodies capitalism or autocratic control of the market, which is powered by the media, including celebrities, film industry, cinema, television, and other forms of advertisement. Here, the media industry is not capitalism, but it is an instrument of capitalism. It is used by the capitalist venture to pacify the populace. Debord defines the modern methods of production in the economy as an accumulation of spectacles, indirectly meaning growing capitalism. There is an elaborate connection between the economy and spectacle, and this phenomenon is supported by Marxist ideology.
The spectacle in the context of the Old Paris is quite different from the kind of spectacle we have today. This change indicates how Old Paris just disappeared as we get mauled by the contemporary spectacle. The activities of the media are currently pound and more palpable than never before. People are constantly bombarded with unending adverts on television sets, social media platforms, and internet search engines. Irritating pop-ups are appearing on browsers that would irritatingly refuse to go away. The excessive images in media that are key driving forces behind capitalism tend to alter human relationships and interactions. The media, which is a manifestation of spectacle, affects the lives of individuals every day through interpretations of the phenomenon in simple narrative communication.
Debord deploys the term ‘spectacle’ to describe the deterioration of cities, which he vividly described in1978 film by stating that “Paris no longer exists” (Pinder, 2000). The loss of Old Paris is quite systematic and insidious. Baron Haussmann is among the individuals who contributed to the disappearance of Old Paris due to his action of demolishing structure to pave the way for public work. Poems had been written to express images of exile and dispossession. The loss of urban features and life was widely attributed to schemes of capitalism and state bureaucracies.
