People face the need to make moral decisions in their daily lives. This comes automatically in some cases, and people need to think critically before deciding on other cases. An automatic case of decision making is when a person gives way to an older adult to be served first in a bank queue or covering their mouths when sneezing in public places. In other cases, a person may have to debate whether to take a particular step. For instance, one may think before helping a stranded person in a lonely place because they might be thugs planning to rob. While morality can be subjective in some cases, a country's laws, religious teachings, and customary laws also guide the public on morality. The prime factor is rational thinking in making moral decisions; emotions significantly affect rational thinking. Emotions are feelings and intuitions, and it is often impossible to make moral judgments without them.
Inner-directed emotions like embarrassment, shame, and guilt often motivate people to act ethically, while outer-directed emotions aim at punishing and disciplining people. Guilt, shame, and embarrassment make people continuously regret their earlier decisions. In the process, it reminds them to make different, better, and moral decisions the next time they face a decision-making situation. Outer-direct emotions like anger and fear are aimed at punishing and disciplining people, reminding them to make moral decisions in future decision-making scenarios (Ethics Unwrapped, 2022). For instance, people direct anger, contempt, and disgust to those who act immorally, making them act ethically in the future.
