“Narayan’s central argument is that using culture to explain fatal forms of violence against women in Third-World countries amounts to suggesting that they suffer death by culture. She also argues that ways in which issues emerge in different national contexts, and contextual factors that shape the specific issues that are named and addressed, affect the information that is available to make such connections and hence our ability to make connections across these contexts.”
How she makes case for her argument
Narayan uses the domestic murders in the U.S. and dowry-murders in India to support her argument. Whereas fatal murders in mainstream western women is normally resistant to cultural explanations making them immune to death by culture, third world women are viewed as victims of their own culture. The ways in which victimization of Third-World women is seen is totally different from the women in Western countries. Using the case of dowry-murders in India and domestic violence murders in the U.S., Narayan establishes that what people understand of cultural differences and similarities may depend on what information is available and what is visible in making comparisons.
How I think of her argument
