Released in 2013, The Wolf of Wall Street is a film by Martin Scorsese. The story is based on Jordan Belfort’s memoir of the same name. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Bernthal, and Mathew McConaughey can be seen as Jordan Belfort, Donnie Azoff, Naomi Lapaglia, Patrick Denham, Max Belfort, Brad Bodnick and Mark Hanna respectively. Leonardo DiCaprio has played the most important role in The Wolf of Wall Street (How to Watch The Wolf of Wall Street, 2016). Jonah Hill is his close friend and business partner, Margot Robbie is Leonardo’s wife, and Kyle Chandler is an FBI agent who attempts to bring Leonardo DiCaprio down in The Wolf of Wall Street. It’s safe to say that this movie is related to five different topics of Organizational Behavior: positive organizational behavior, groups and teams, decision-making and creativity, power, influence and politics, and communication in the digital era.
1. Positive Organizational Behavior
Positive organizational behavior is all about applying positively oriented human resource capacities or strengths to the organization, and these capacities are measurable and manageable, ensuring the short-term and long-term success of the firm (Burnham, 2016). In The Wolf of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) can be found saying that goals have no power. This depicts his positive organizational behavior. He advocates something beyond the boundaries and wants everyone to see this world from a whole new perspective. Basically, his character is full of energy, and he has a clear vision of how to engage people. A good idea is to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the staff, as Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) does in The Wolf of Wall Street. He does not pay any attention to who he is going to hire, meaning no focus on the resume of a worker but on their personality traits. If all employers begin doing the same, then it would be possible for them to see their companies growing. In simple words, we can say that they should have positive organizational behavior, and while hiring someone, no discrimination should be taken into account.
2. Groups and Teams
The Wolf of Wall Street is a good example of how groups or teams are built and run. If the manager or owner of a company learns how to be good friends with their employees, then the chances of achieving success will be significantly high (Beehner, 2018). In this film, people working for Jordan Belfort are happy to collaborate with one another. All of them are ready to sacrifice their lives for him; they love working toward a common goal. Jordan Belfort develops good relationships (professional ones) with his employees. This proves to be good for him as he gains a lot of respect and value.
3. Decision-Making and Creativity
Creating an enticing company culture is the need of the time (Leather & Kirwan, 2012). This is the most unique and creative idea presented in The Wolf of Wall Street.
