You will choose a theme path in this module and will develop and build on this theme path throughout your course of study in this class.
As an academic writer, it is vital to form a working thesis about your topic early, so that you can shape your research and form an inquiry plan about the research material that you will be using. Keeping this in mind, you will need to select and analyze key concepts of the topic early in the research process. As such, be cognizant of the theses or the claims made by the authors who write in your chosen path as you read the literature tied to your theme.
Instructions
For this Critical Thinking Assignment, you are to develop a summary response essay. This should build on the work you submitted to the discussion board for this week. Be sure to accurately decipher your assignment.
Instructions for writing a summary response paper are included in the lecture. Be sure to refer to these prior to delving into the content of your paper. Your paper should accomplish the following:
1. Introduction: Thesis statement, information about the article.
- Be sure to note key information in the article: author, time and place of publication and article title.
- Be sure to note the main thesis of the article that includes the authors key ideas and intentions.
2. Summary: Your analysis of the article. Be sure to write in the objective third person.
- Refer to the author and not the article during your examination of key points as articles are inanimate.
3. Response (body paragraphs): Note where you agree, or disagree with ideas, and points the author asserts in the article.
- Be sure to paraphrase and cite in-text as you develop academic paragraphs that have a topic sentence, evidence, and analysis of the ideas you are exploring.
4. Conclusion: Note the main implications of the article, any gaps you see in the research, or where you think you can look further for information.
Expand on your group discussion post in which you summarized an article.

In the article, "Closing the College Gap: A Roadmap to Postsecondary Readiness and Attainment" by Balfanz, Robert, et al., informs the readers about the lack of alternate routes of education after high school. According to the article, high school students are not educated in further educational courses besides college. Balfanz, DePaoli, Ingram, Bridgeland & Fox (2016) talks about how there are jobs that don't require a university diploma and jobs that university graduates will gain that don't pertain to their degree. The writer also factors out that 80% of college students who had been ranked within the bottom percentile in high school will not complete their bachelor's degree program. The author mentions how this could be because these students were not adequately educated on the option of going into vocational training, apprenticeship, or workplace training, and were pushed to attend college. While college is the most common route and is required for some professions, it is not the only option. Students and educators are not educated enough on these options and do not have the proper resources to pursue them. While universities leave students to learn different skills in their own, students have to struggle to bridge the gap between college and career.
The authors starts by examining why there is an increasing number of students attaining postsecondary degrees has become a national priority of the American government yet there are no efforts to increase job opportunities. The authors also examine the stereotypical way to succeed in America: earning a college degree. "What's the important thing to achieve in the United States? Short of turning into a star TV, the solution is rote and, a few might argue, rather knee-jerk: Earn a college degree. ” The author also then goes on to describe this idea that many Americans have. He talks about "the idea that four years of higher schooling will translate right into a better process, better earnings, and a happier existence. This belief that college is the only way to succeed in America has led to high schools and communities not preparing students for other formers of higher education or workplace training.
