This career development plan template can be used as a tool to guide your thought process and map your progress over a chosen period. It is intended to be used from now until graduation to aid in planning your career. 

Completion of this plan will follow a 4 step process. Each step will address specific career related questions:

  1. What skills do you already possess? (Where are you now?)

  2. What do you want for your career?  (Where do you want to go?)

  3. How might you get there? (What steps do you need to take to get there?)

  4. Who can help? (What resources might I use?)

    2. This process starts with taking a good look at where you are currently at.  What are your skills, talents and interests? What are your values – do you like to lead, work with people or alone with data or text? Do you like working face to face with people or prefer independent work? Do you like to work inside or outside?  Do you like working to deadlines? Which teams do you like working on, quiet or loud, small or large?

Setting Goals

Now that you have a clearer picture of where you are now and where you want to go, it is now time to set some goals for yourself and create your Career Development Plan – goal summary.

When deciding on your career development goals it is imperative that you set yourself up for success. Using the SMART goal setting process is a good way to achieve this. SMART

Specific (so you know exactly what you are trying to achieve)

Measurable (so you know when you have achieved it!)

Action-oriented (so you can DO something about it!)

Realistic (so it IS achievable) and

Time-Bound (has a deadline)

To gain more experience, I would probably apply for a business marketing consultant or a business analyst position. My future plans include running a small business in a countryside, preferably in the food industry, and to expand it to the urban areas.

The first step is to apply for a position in a company. After securing this position, I will be applying for a master’s degree in business marketing. When I have enough experience and savings, I will apply for a loan and find a partner for my future small business.

Business connections are important in establishing a career. Specifically, my future colleagues, who are my classmates today, will become significant assets since one of them might become my business partner in the future. Furthermore, a good recommendation from a professor will greatly help my career.

Where am I now in regards to my career?

I still have a few but great experiences in management in some companies in China.

What is my view of current situation?

There are still several areas that I must learn. However, I am very positive of my current situation. I believe that with hard work and perseverance, I will achieve something relevant in life.

What have been my experiences to date?

I was the assistant in International Department of the Hangzhou Branch of Agricultural Bank of China from June to August 2017 and became the assistant market director of the Zhenjiang Zhongda Technology Import in June to August 2018.
In May to June 2019, I experienced being the assistant in investment banking department of China Merchants Group. Furthermore, I was able to volunteer as a teacher in Shanghai Changping Primary School from June to August 2016.

What do I enjoy most?

Apart from reading the current events and analyzing the current trends in different economies, I enjoy sports and recreational activities.
