The United States has experienced in energy, and many Americans have been sent abroad to fight to protect the nation's access to oil. Over the years, the United States has embraced sustainability as an integral part of its operations. Currently, the military is applying sustainability principles as a part of its strategic objectives in enhancing national security. The trends in global natural resources tend to pose a security threat to the United States. The prosperity and American ideals of life are threatened by climate change threats, particularly the increasing scarcity of essential resources. Moreover, as the world population continues to grow, the resource imbalance will also increase. This has presented unique challenges to the military as the security of the country is threatened. National strategists are at the center of addressing the scarcity of resources (Becker, 2011).
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in having a green military, which is perceived as a force multiplier for the United States. When the military can attain energy efficiency and use renewable energy, there will be significant benefits to the world and the United States in particular. With enhanced energy efficiency, the taxpayers will have reduced costs on the military as oil dependence is reduced. Since the natural resources are declining, there is a need to translate the focus to renewable energies, which a more sustainable and will ensure that the military is ever-prepared to protect the nation. The diversion from dependence on depleting energy sources to solar, wind, biomass, and wind can be a game-changer in the energy market and military participation in sustainability.
Most of the finite energy sources used within the United States are sourced from other countries. However, enhancing alternative energy sources will reduce the nation’s dependence on imports, ensuring that people can focus on pertinent issues that affect local development. Moreover, since America is a global power, treating the sustainability crisis as a national security challenge will enable the country to cement its position as a global power. Climate change is threatening food security in many parts of the world. The unavailability of water in many regions is perceived to be the main limiting factor in food production. The military can take part in developing and recommending a national sustainable development strategy that will reduce the nation's dependence on imports and foster economic growth.
