Rhetorical Analysis of Marche’s Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?
Facebook has become a common social media platform through which people interact. However, it has created a public debate on whether it makes people more social or lonely. Stephen Marche weighs into the issue in his article, Is Facebook Making Us Lonely? Despite appealing to ethos, pathos, and logos to support his argument, Marche fails to adequately support and justify how Facebook is making us lonely. 
Ethos
In his introduction, Marche narrates the story of Vickers and how her death was surrounded by loneliness. Despite being a celebrity, she did not have close friends, children, or religious groups. In this case, Marche uses ethos to appeal to the virtue, morals, intelligence, and perception of trustworthiness to the readers. He uses the story to show how social media, such as Facebook, has made us lonely. His allusion to the story is that Vickers was more focused on social media than his social life (Marche, 2012). The statement ‘Her computer was on too, its glow permeating the empty space’ is meant to show Vickers’ obsession with social media, which made her lonely. 
Pathos
Marche also uses pathos to support his argument. He does this by appealing to the senses and motivations of using Facebook, biases, and prejudice...
