Understanding the relationship between the cultural, psychological, and artistic elements of the cinema is important for its viewers. It allows them to be able to have a deeper appreciation of the film based on the external context over which it is made. In this article, the author would like to focus on analyzing the contextual and artistic elements in Folman’s film entitled Waltz with Bashir (2008). Specifically, this reflection would be done about other works that deal with the psychology of the cinematic experience. All in all, the author believes that this film contemplates the idea of the sensory-motor schema, which is apparently based on the protagonist’s desire to remove his guilt and to make good.
Movie Reflection
The film entitled Waltz with Bashir was an animated drama film that focuses on the main character Folman. The main storyline revolves around Folman’s journey in trying to reestablish his past memories when he was still serving as a soldier in the Lebanon War. Although the movie depicts gruesome and violent scenes, its main focus is the present wherein the main protagonist seeks help from various different specialists to help him recover his memories.
Upon viewing the film, some of the most salient themes that the viewers would recognize are those relating to war, violence, massacre, and racism. These are shown through memories and flashbacks of the Lebanon war, which includes the massacre inside the Palestinian refugee camp.
