Introduction
One of the accurate methods to measure nursing competency is the ability to apply classroom knowledge in practice. As a future advanced practice nurse, you need to connect your classroom experience to your practicum experience. In my area of practice in delivering group and family psychotherapy, one of the ways I translate classroom knowledge to practice is through the use of nursing and counselling theories learned in the classroom in delivering psychotherapy (Nichols & Davis, 2020). I have acquired adequate knowledge in taking histories, conducting assessments, making diagnoses, and managing a wide range of mental illnesses. Therefore, I expect that applying classroom knowledge to clinical practice will be an easy task. Besides, by integrating nursing and counselling theories into practice, I look forward to addressing different patients' needs to promote a healing environment and good health outcomes.
Selected Nursing Theory
The nursing theory of choice for this practicum experience is the modeling and role-modeling theory, which was developed in 1983 by Evelyn Tomlin, Helen Erickson, and Mary Ann. The primary concept of the theory is that each patient is unique regarding needs, believes, and disease presentation, and this uniqueness should be respected during nursing care. The decision to use this theory was influenced by the fact that it promotes a nurse's ability to nurture and care for every patient based on their uniqueness. In this case, the therapeutic relationship developed between a nurse and a patient is characterized by respect, trust, awareness, and shared goals (Erickson, 2010). Additionally, the theory is diverse and borrows concepts from other recognized nursing theories. The modeling and remodeling draw its ideas from the theory of the hierarchy of needs developed by Abraham Maslow, the theory of psychosocial stages by Erickson, the theory of cognitive development by Piaget, and the theory of general adaptation syndrome founded by Seyle and Lazarus (McComb & Simpson, 2013). Combining these diverse concepts promotes a holistic approach to patient needs during therapy. The theory also directs nurses to adopt a holistic approach in treatment regarding caring for the mind, body, and emotions and spirit. It asserts that people are more than the sum of their parts; therefore, all their parts should be cared for holistically for healing to take place.
Regarding the theory of the hierarchy of needs, the modeling and role modeling theory states that basic needs drive human behavior; therefore, growth and healing only occur when patient needs are met. However, if unmeet, these needs can create a situation that threatens an individual's psychological well-being. Additionally, Basic needs are only satisfied when the patient perceives they are met (McComb & Simpson, 2013). Therefore, during psychotherapy, I strive to meet the basic patient needs.
In theory, Erickson also proposes that the psychosocial Stages should be used as a means of evaluating the healing process....
