Gender and Race
Gender and race are inevitable and unavoidable subjects in the United States and other parts of the world, which have attracted many debates both in the past and currently. Various people in the United States have expressed racism in their views, opinions, and speech. There are several races in the United States, including White American, Asian American, African or Black American, Mexican American, and Native Americans. In given research done in the United States, 45% of Black Americans have been discriminated against as they buy a home or rent an apartment, 41% of women have been discriminated against equal pay, and the police officers have discriminated against 18% of Asian Americans. White Americans have been discriminating against the other minority races and more so the women from those minority races in the United States because they are the largest race and consider themselves as special.
In the United States, there are sizeable inequalities of race and gender as a result of the dominance of some races, such as the White Americans. This is evident in the “Brazilian is not a Race,” which is a collection of poetry by Wendy Trevino, where various people such as Elizabeth Bishop and Clarice Lispector have negative views and attitudes towards other races (Trevino 1). Clarice Lispector, who is a White American, is referred to as anti-black by Wendy. It is clear that Clarice does not like Black Americans, which absolutely means that she cannot give Black Americans opportunities if she is in a position to. In the case of Elizabeth Bishop, she did not welcome Ukrainian Americans and did not care about their welfare because she hated them. It is also important to note that gender and race inequalities and discrimination go hand in hand, and they mutually coexist in society.
Race and gender result in social class and sexuality issues because of unequal sharing of public resources and opposed opinions towards gender, where women are viewed as inferior in society. All this is a result of the intersectionality of social categorizations, such as gender and race, which also includes class and sexuality. Inequalities of race have existed in the United States since the colonial period. This was characterized by practices and laws that discriminated against other communities with reference to their race. In this case, most White Americans legally enjoyed some privileges, rights, and freedoms that were denied to the other minority ethnic groups and races. Some of the rights and privileges that the White Americans enjoyed included the rights to vote, land acquisition, criminal procedures, and education.
In Wendy Trevino’s poem, she says and argues that race is relational in that people are racialized in relation to the superior people who have power (Trevino 2). Therefore, most of the inferior races in the United States have been intimidated by the White Americans who have assumed superiority because they are the majority race. This was evident in how Mexican Americans are compared to other racialized groups and are considered as inferior.
