A Gap in Equity Related to Mental Health Access for Veterans
A gap in equity related to the accessibility of veterans’ mental healthcare services is a significant problem that persists today and which needs to be addressed once and for all. Although government and non-government organizations have made effort to address this issue, it appears that many veterans with mental disorders do not get appropriate medical assistance. One of the existing healthcare initiatives that were established to solve the problem of inaccessibility of mental healthcare services for veterans is the Welcome Back Veterans (WBV). The program was introduced to support veterans together with their families to cope with mental health issues. Besides, it is clear that a significant number of veterans experience depression, traumatic brain injuries, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) since they face harrowing events during their service time as soldiers (RAND Corporation, 2021).
The WBV's specific goals are to address the gap in access to mental healthcare services for veterans. One of the primary objectives behind the formation of the WBV was to manage the mental health consequences of veterans by bringing government and non-government organizations together to achieve a common goal. Second, the WBV support other programs that are established to help veterans suffering from mental health problems. Third, it gives grants to medical and academic institutions nationwide to educate veterans and offer them the healthcare services that they need (Tanielian, Batka, & Meredith, 2018). Fourth, the WBV facilitates the collaboration between systems of care in the local communities to address emerging challenges that might make it hard for veterans with mental health issues.
The Robert McCormick Foundation and Major League Baseball founded the WBV initiative in 2008 (RAND Corporation, 2021).
