Sam is 30-year-old single man with a history of depressive illness, one suicide attempt. He has had issues with alcohol use and about 10 months ago was laid off from his job doing data entry.
Since then it has been quite frustrating for him to find work. Since his layoff he has been socializing a lot less, this is something he used to enjoy. He has been sleeping more, drinking more alcohol and when he does drink he tends to get extremely irritable. He was kicked out of his house five weeks ago by his parents. Now, he is living in a community shelter.
Please address the following questions in your Initial Discussion Board post:
1) What would your goals be for the first meeting, taking into consideration what you have read so far about the initial intake as well as based on a recovery model?
2) How would you approach the interview?

Sam is a depressed individual with one case of attempted suicide. Also, he has an alcohol addiction and is easily irritable. However, he used to be a social person, which can be used to mitigate his problem. The recovery model requires one to build resilience in the client (Jacob, 2015). Therefore, on my first meeting with Sam, I would ask him whether he has spoken with his friends about his condition. Then, based on his answer, I would like to set a goal that would ensure he communicates with someone. This could be with a close friend or relative. The second goal I would establish is to enroll him in an alcohol addiction (AA) program. This is to keep him away from drinking too much.
Sam is an individual who has already attempted suicide once. Sam would likely be thinking of committing suicide again, given his advanced age and highly irritable state. However, he may not be willing to engage himself in a counseling program. According to a study done by Schmitz-Buhl et al. (2019), there were more involuntary patients admitted due to self-harm and suicidal behavior compared to voluntary patients. So as a third goal, I would want to ask him if he thinks of killing himself again. If he says that he has been thinking of committing suicide again but does not wish to enroll in a counseling program, I would have to involuntarily register him in a treatment program for people with suicidal behavior. But, if he does not report thoughts of committing suicide again, I would proceed with the therapy program.
As a therapist, one’s objectives concerning their clients are similar to a nurse’s. Nurses seek to ensure patient safety and desirable outcomes. Also, they are the primary caregivers; hence, they need to listen to the needs of their patients (Wheeler, 2013). So, as Sam’s therapist, I would approach the interview as a listener.
