A 40 years old male patient with a history of suicidal ideation was presented for emergency psychiatric care. The patient was brought in by his wife after he attempted suicide by hanging. The wife found a noose in their bedroom and the patient was getting ready to hang himself when she came back from work unexpectedly. Initial evaluation, which considers plan and intent of killing oneself, past attempts, mental health history, substance use, and irritability (Brenner, Marco, Kluesner, Schears, & Martin, 2020) revealed that the patient has never attempted suicide but has always had suicide ideation and suffers from clinical depression.
If the patient was a child/ adolescent, I would evaluate and assess them the same way as an adult. I would, however, involve the guardian/parent and work towards identifying suicidal ideation early enough so that we can establish interventions that will help the child/ adolescent cope and prevent suicidal behavior.
