The primary conflict in the story Hills like White Elephant is a pregnancy and a hot debate between an American man and Jig about whether to have an abortion or not. The discussion takes place in a train station, and the man feels it is an effortless operation; thus, Jig should proceed to abort the baby. Jig does not want to perform the procedure, but the American man insists it is the best decision for them.
The conflict is not direct, but it is brought to light when the man tells Jig it is what bothers them and when she is concerned if things will go back the way they used to be if she aborts. In addition, the man argues that babies are a burden, and no matter how unrealistic abortion feels, they should go ahead and do it. Finally, the man promises Jig that things will go back to before if she aborts.
Jig is not happy with her man's suggestion as she is conflicted about choosing between the man and the child. However, she understands that when she keeps the baby, the American man will leave her and the baby, and if she aborts, things might not go back to the way things used to be, making it the central conflict in the story Hills like White Elephant (Hemingway, 2022).
