Transborder
The application titled “Transborder” was the most successful. This statement proposes an exhibition whose theme is informed by the tensions and the transborder activities at the Santa Fe International Bridge. The Santa Fe Bridge connects El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, two cities on opposite sides of the US-Mexico border. The United States and Mexico have had issues in the past, making this bridge a contested area. Over the years, harsh policies have been implanted to regulate movement across the border. These stiff regulations largely affect transborder citizens and disrupt the commercial and social connection between cities.
One of the main reasons I found this proposal attractive is the relevance of its theme in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic period and its aftermath on border regulations. Authorities have taken advantage of outbreaks to instill harsh transborder controls in the past. In most cases, these regulations are implemented without considering the impact on border communities. According to this statement, the proposed exhibition will aim to convey the unity and fluidity of cultural and economic aspects of both communities. Consequently, the exhibition will be raising awareness of an issue that has been ignored in the development of the transborder movement along the Santa Fe Bridge.
Also, the proposed exhibition provides a platform for intercultural interaction and challenges the historical notion of nativism. Nativism is one of the main problems contributing to cultural and societal crises such as racism. Both United States and Mexico share equal measures of the negative implications of these crises. In addition, they are challenging the notion of nativism introduced the debate surrounding transborder citizenship, which affects communities on either side. The proposed exhibition taps into the power of art to shed light on the key issues affecting modern society. Its relevance and the themes conveyed qualifies this statement as the most successful.
Irish Bodies Ownership and Rights
The weakest application statement was titled “Irish Bodies Ownership and Rights.” This statement proposes an exhibition in Dublin, Ireland, to challenge the existing quo on women’s reproductive rights. Ireland has had a history of issues with women’s reproductive issues, which is triggered by the country’s deep roots in Catholicism. Among the themes of the proposed exhibition are abortion rights, sex, birth, death, and desire among women. While this theme raises a substantive topic of discussion, the proposed themes promote a contrary impact on the community.
One of the factors missing in this application statement is relevance. The target issue of the proposed exhibition was resolved, making the proposed exhibition behind time. Currently, Irish women have the same reproductive rights as most women across the globe. The exhibition aims to challenge abortion rights because government and society undermine Irish women’s reproductive rights. While this issue has been relevant in the past decade, new policies and expanding women’s r...
