With several social media sites, it does not essay to identify the best site that suits our needs, unlike other popular sites like Instagram or Facebook, Pinterest have made things better. Pinterest is an online platform that helps users create their virtual reading spaces online, the site also provides valuable information on any subject, including the name of the author, a short description of the story and the link for further reading. These pins are more than just images; they are a gateway to more fresh information.
During my search, one of the articles that caught my attention when addressing education issues was an Eric Jensen's article titled “how poverty affects classroom engagement" (Jesen, 2013). He highlights seven points to show these differences, especially among middle-class and low-income students. For him, teachers need to understand these seven issues and give low-income students a conducive learning environment (Jesen, 2013).
Throughout the article, the author uses other sources of information to strengthen his view on education; he presents a study to prove the link between intelligence and health. According to Neuman, (2016), health-related factors like eating food with lower nutritional value affect students not only their attention, but also reasoning, learning process and memory.
The author presents several examples to introduce his claim and support why children from low socio-economic background risk being an academic failure compared to middle-class children (Jesen, 2013). For example, having adequate glucose in the body, helps in improving cognitive function resulting to good memory. The author suggests that activities like Yoga training can increase metabolic controls for children to stay active (Jesen, 2013).
Using statistics, the article logically supports the fact that teachers play crucial roles in student’s lives and by understanding the differences between students from these two different social classes is important more so for teachers because they can make adjustment to accommodate these differences (Jesen, 2013). One of the outstanding content of the article is how the author provides a detailed solution for each of the seven identified differences between students from low-income families and middle class.
However, the author fails to address how other stakeholders can help teachers assist students from poor backgrounds.
